Our Spirit Card Fundraiser was very successful.

Thank you for your Support!

Your feedback is needed by the Citizens Advisory Committee for Instruction and Housing. This committee is currently meeting, by a charge from the Smithtown Board of Education. In short, due to the NYS Tax Cap, our income is limited.

Please see the documents below, which are also attached as a pdf. for your convenience. As the committee representative for the Great Hollow PTA, I have been tasked with obtaining your feedback to any of the categories in which you have an opinion.

This worksheet is meant for me to share with our membership and explain what each category means. Since we do not have a GHPTA meeting scheduled for December, feel free to contact me should you have any questions.

Please reply at your earliest convenience, but no later than December 11th, as I have to prepare all responses prior to my next CACIH meeting.

Please keep in mind the purpose is to obtain budget savings in order to maintain as much of our program as possible.
The tax cap and state aid has substantially limited district funds and with declining enrollment, housing efficiency is what we are working on. That being said, this chart is seeking opinion on the Community and Educational Values & Financial Impact of the various plans in the chart.

Overview of categories in the chart

PROS - Community and Educational Values - What is your opinion on for each plan? Why?
CONS - Community and Educational Values - What is your opinion for each plan? Why?
Financial Impact - The details are to be determined but if there is financial impact (savings, cost or neither),
would you consider & find value in the plan?

K-2/3-5 PRINCETON PLAN - This plan would keep all 8 elementary schools open but we could obtain staff efficiencies by making 4 buildings K-2 and 4 buildings 3-5. This plan may increase the time some students are on the bus and/or increase bus cost.

K-4/5-8 - This plan could close up to 2 elementary schools by making 3 buildings K-4 and 3 buildings 5-8.

K-5/6-8 - This plans our current configuration and may allow for closing 1 elementary school and/or 1 middle school.

K-6/7-8 - This plan could close a middle school.

Other - Anything else to consider

Your feedback is very important to this process for the future of Smithtown School District.
Thank you in advance and be well!
Warm regards,
Stacy Berman, GHPTA Representative

On December 9, 2014 at 7:00 pm at New York Avenue the BOE is holding a public hearing to discuss the Alternative Veteran's Tax Exemption. The Board of Education would like to hear what we, the taxpayers think before they make this important and irreversible decision to give tax breaks to Veterans and their families.
